From humble beginnings back in 2003, Hatters Hostels has grown in this short time to include four city centre located properties based in Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham. A family owned operation, the first and most well known Hatters was founded at Newton Street in the hip and trendy Northern Quarter of Manchester’s city centre. One of the most iconic buildings in the city and with a colourful history as a former bowling hat factory (hence the name!). Hatters at Newton Street was a success from the start being fully booked on its opening night….though admittedly there were only 10 beds available!
Now a 160 bed hostel, Hatters at Newton Street offers great value accommodation in a relaxed social environment only 5 minutes walk from Manchester Piccadilly train station and surrounded by the coolest independent shops, bars and restaurants in the city. It prides itself on its local knowledge and enthusiasm for all things Manchester delivered to like minded travellers in a fun and friendly setting. But with success comes demand and so rather than adding a third bunk or a new floor, a second property was sought. And so it was… Hatters at Hilton Chambers was born.
Recognising the new breed of “flashpacker” and the growing demand for quality city centre budget accommodation, Hatters at Hilton Chambers sets the standard for ‘boutique’ style hostel accommodation. With a combination of hotel quality en-suite private and shared dormitory rooms, the hostel has been hugely successful with groups of all ages and caters for a more discerning type of visitor for which comfort is a priority. At this point we knew we were onto something, and in late 2008 the third edition of Hatters was introduced to Birmingham in the beautiful and historic Jewellery Quarter.
Built within the walls of Grade II listed Vaughton Gothic Works (a former silverware factory which created the original FA Cup), Hatters Birmingham follows in the footsteps of its predecessor by offering en-suite private and shared dormitories rooms. A favourite for groups and seasoned travellers alike, Hatters Birmingham creates a full flavour of the city’s history with bespoke artwork pieces which recognise Birmingham’s rich industrial past and unique cultural significance as the birthplace of Heavy rock!
In fact Hatters Birmingham has become so popular it was recently voted No.1 Hostel in England 2011 at the annual Hostelworld awards ceremony in Dublin and also nominated as one of the best large hostels in the world!
This was extra special for us as these awards are decided directly by customers. It has given us such enthusiasm in fact that in 2012 we are extending the hostel to 200 beds equipped with bar and catering facilities as well as large meeting rooms and even a sauna!
Not to be outdone however Hatters Liverpool, opened in 2009 remains the big daddy of all Hatters Hostels located in a beautiful Victorian building which dates back to 1846. This 300 bed, 3 star hostel offers high quality city centre en-suite accommodation with a focus on local knowledge provided by fun and friendly staff in a relaxed and social environment. As with all Hatters Hostels it provides free breakfast, free Wi-Fi and 24hr check-in/security and is a hugely popular location for groups of all ages and individual travellers alike.
However, we aren’t finished with Hatters Liverpool yet. Plans are afoot to make this great hostel even better, so watch this space for further developments!
All in all it’s been a journey and we feel Hatters Hostels have created an ideal option for anyone seeking great quality, affordable accommodation in any of these fantastic UK cities.
